12. Samuddapañha
Đức vua đã nói rằng: “Thưa ngài Nāgasena, điều được gọi là ‘biển, biển.’ “Vì lý do gì nước được gọi là ‘biển’?”
Vị trưởng lão đã nói rằng: “Tâu đại vương, nước chừng nào thì muối chừng ấy, muối chừng nào thì nước chừng ấy; vì thế được gọi là ‘biển’.”

12. Rājā āha ‘‘bhante nāgasena, ‘samuddo samuddo’ti vuccati, kena kāraṇena udakaṃ ‘samuddo’ti vuccatī’’ti? Thero āha ‘‘yattakaṃ, mahārāja, udakaṃ, tattakaṃ loṇaṃ. Yattakaṃ loṇaṃ, tattakaṃ udakaṃ. Tasmā ‘samuddo’ti vuccatī’’ti.
12. The king said, "Venerable Nāgasena, it is said ‘ocean, ocean.’ For what reason is water called ‘ocean’?" The Elder replied, "Great king, as much as there is water, so much is there salt. As much as there is salt, so much is there water. Therefore, it is called ‘ocean.’"
12. Đức vua lại hỏi: “Kính bạch Đại đức Nāgasena, người ta gọi là ‘biển, biển’, do nguyên nhân nào mà nước được gọi là ‘biển’?” Vị Trưởng lão trả lời: “Tâu Đại vương, có bao nhiêu nước thì có bấy nhiêu muối. Có bao nhiêu muối thì có bấy nhiêu nước. Do đó được gọi là ‘biển’.”

13. Rājā āha ‘‘bhante nāgasena, kena kāraṇena samuddo ekaraso loṇaraso’’ti? ‘‘Cirasaṇṭhitattā kho, mahārāja, udakassa samuddo ekaraso loṇaraso’’ti.
13. The king said, “Venerable Nāgasena, for what reason is the ocean of a single taste, the taste of salt?” “Great king, because the water has remained for a long time, the ocean is of a single taste, the taste of salt.”
13. Đức vua hỏi: "Kính bạch ngài Nāgasena, do nguyên nhân nào mà biển cả có một vị, là vị mặn?". "Tâu Đại vương, chính do vì nước đã tồn tại lâu dài nên biển cả có một vị, là vị mặn."
